Re: witch hunt

Interesting, I can't think of a good translation either. In English sometimes we say 'scapegoat', which is picking out someone or something innocent and putting all the blame on them. But 'witch hunt' unfortunately comes from real actions of people accusing women of being witches.

I have two minor points, the first is that you say 'witch hunt' is for imaginary crime; but the term is so general now that it can include actual crimes and 'hunting' for people to pin the blame even when they have nothing to do with it. For example, The gang boss had someone steal money from him and started accusing those close to him in what turned out to be a witch hunt that took lives. The money was in fact stolen by a close family member who had gambled it all away .

That's a minor detail. The second point is, I'm familiar with 批鬥 with a song, I'm thinking it's a public trial where no one can win? To me that sounds like a witch hunt, but why would it not be a good equivalent?
