Can I spell 芷 as Zi or Zhi?
Here are my comments on the spelling of 芷:
Zi – Cantonese Jyutping system. An acceptable modern system, but many people don’t know how to pronounce ‘Zi’.
Chi – Cantonese Eitel/Dyer-Ball system. A very old system, but is still the most popular one in HK. Actually, 芷 does not sound like ‘chi’ as in ‘Chile’.
Ji – Cantonese Yale system. This sound is closest to 芷 but not quite popular.
Jee – variant spelling in Cantonese Yale.
Tsz – Modern Cantonese does not have the ‘ts’ initial sound anymore.
Zhi – Mandarin Pinyin system. Least desirable spelling unless the other two characters 李 and 軒 are also spelt in Mandarin way. “
