I hear "journeyman" every once in a while, it conveys sort of traveling and doing one-time jobs. Like a journeyman football player or specialty worker. To me they can have high skill but when I think of this word I think of traveling, not staying in one place or building a school.
If it matters I was raised in the U.S.A., I hear it very few times now but in my opinion it's a common word.
