A friend of mine, has this poem framed, and it belonged to his grandfather in Hoiping China. The poem was originally written by 王鐸 as a gift to the German Jesuit missionary Johann Adam Schall von Bell (湯若望) who became an adviser to the Shunzhi Emperor of the Qing dynasty. My friend's framed version, is of course not the original. He asked me to translate it for him, but after taking a look at it I realized it's a little too much out of my league. This part of the poem is the 3rd part out of a total of 4 parts. There are references made which I can only guess the meaning such as 燕薊 which might be referring to Beijing and Tianjin. I really don't have enough background knowledge to make sense of this. What I get from it is that 王鐸 admires him travelling so far and all of his countless students and how he helped to improve life for those under dire circumstances. It seems that 王鐸 came down with some kind of ailment which requires Johann's medical expertise.
Can someone please cast a little more light on the meaning of this poem. I would really appreciate it!
