I think “ashamed”, usually translated as 慚愧 or 羞愧, is used when we are talking about sth very serious or important. For instance, ashamed of one’s misbehaviour at a party.
On the other hand, we merely feel “embarrassed” when we have made a mistake or feel “awkward” when we don’t know how to write our own name. In such cases, 尷尬, 難為情 or 唔好意思 would be appropriate.
