When I search 「假想敵」 , all the on-line dictionaries define it as " imaginary enemy"
My problem with that is -- It could be confused with: "imagined , non- existed enemy " Just like "imaginary friend " = "imagined, non- existed friend"
In my opinion, the term 「假想敵」 usually refer to 「想像中的敵人」 ( imagined enemy) or 「假設性的敵人」 ( hypothetical enemy ) Which is not always a non- existed entity
Example:
「今次聯合軍事演習,明顯以C國 為假想敵。」
(Country C is their imagined enemy / hypothetical enemy )
** meanwhile, " imaginary enemy" should be translated to「虛擬敵人」in Chinese.
Example:
「以外星人及喪屍為虛擬敵人的戰爭遊戲」
(alien and zombie are imaginary enemies)
CantoDic can do better than other dictionaries and define 假想敵 as "imagined enemy / hypothetical enemy"
